MAAO 2013 Weeklong Course General Information:

MAAO Mission Statement

The mission of the Minnesota Association of Assessing Officers (MAAO) is to provide education and information to promote excellence in property appraisal and assessment administration through professional development with the highest ethical standards.
Expectation of Participants

MAAO courses are comparable to college level courses.  Participants should come to class prepared to participate in lectures, work problems and reviews, read all suggested materials and complete assigned homework.
Registration Information

Participants are required to complete a Registration Form and submit the appropriate fees prior to the start of a course as directed on the form.  All fees include Minnesota sales tax as required.
Cancellation Policy
A refund, less a $30 administration fee will be issued for cancellations received five business days prior to the start of a course or conference.  Registrants who fail to attend or cancel prior to the cancellation deadline are responsible for the entire fee.  If a registrant is unable to attend the event, a substitute from the jurisdiction that paid the registration fee can attend at no additional charge. Please send written notification of this change 5 business days prior to the start of the event. MAAO reserves the right to cancel any event if necessary and provide a full refund. Refunds will be issued within 30 days of the date of the course or conference. Membership dues are non-refundable.

Locations and Facilities

Courses will be held at the location identified on the Registration Form.
Confirmations

Confirmation of registrations will be provided prior to the start of a course.
Lodging

Lodging information will be included on each Registration Form, if you need any further assistance finding lodging please contact the MAAO Weeklong Course Coordinator.
Time Schedule

Participants should be in attendance by 7:30 AM on the first day of a course.  Sessions will generally be held from 8AM to 5:00PM daily Monday through Thursday with the final exam on Thursday afternoon unless otherwise stated on the Registration Form.  Each course includes 30 hours of continuing education (or as indicated on the course posting) plus examination.
Textbook and Calculators

The required textbooks are listed on the Registration Form along with the fee including sales tax for purchase.  They will be provided to the registrant Monday Morning.  It is the responsibility of the registrant to purchase the textbook prior to the course to ensure a copy is available for the course.
Continuing Education

The Minnesota Board of Assessors grants 30 hours of continuing education for attending MAAO sponsored weeklong courses unless otherwise stated on the Registration Form.  Daily attendance will be verified during the week.  Exams are required for licensure purposes.  However, all courses also qualify for continuing education and no exam is required. Some courses may be approved for continuing education by the Minnesota Department of Commerce.  Details are included on each Registration Form.
MAAO Scholarships

MAAO annually offers a limited number of scholarships to cover the registration fee.  Please see the MAAO scholarship page on the website for information and applications.

MAAO Instructor Opportunities:
The MAAO Weeklong Course Committee is always looking for assessors interested in instructing or co-instructing the MAAO weeklong courses. If you are interested in this rewarding challenge you should first plan on attending part or the entire course you are interested in instructing this year. Upon being selected as an instructor trainee by the committee you will be provided the course materials, be asked to instruct a portion of the course this year, be reimbursed for your expenses and be provided a stipend. Approved instructor trainees would then be involved in teaching the course at its next offering.
If this opportunity interests you please review the 2013 course offerings and see if this year's courses work for your schedule. If so, contact Dave Armstrong, chair of the MAAO Weeklong Course Committee to discuss your plan. He can be contacted at 507-357-8215 or email darmstrong@co.le-seuer.mn.us. The MAAO courses are only as good as the instructors and we need to continue these excellent educational offerings to provide the best training possible to Minnesota assessors.
Thank you for your consideration!
